What is a Prothrombin Time (PT)?

The Prothrombin Time measures how many seconds a sample of your plasma takes to clot once a standard trigger is added, testing what is known as the extrinsic clotting pathway. Alongside the raw seconds, laboratories report the INR, an International Normalised Ratio that adjusts for differences between reagents so that a value measured in Dehradun means the same as one measured anywhere else. That standardisation is the reason warfarin can be dosed safely at all. The pathway PT examines depends on clotting factors made by the liver, several of which require vitamin K, which gives the test two quite different uses. It is a core part of assessing liver disease, where it indicates how much functional capacity remains and carries weight in staging chronic liver disease. Its most frequent use is monitoring warfarin, where regular testing keeps the INR inside the target range your doctor has set, usually between 2.0 and 3.0 but higher for some heart valves. It is also checked in suspected vitamin K deficiency, in malabsorption, and in newborns. If you take warfarin, never adjust the dose yourself on the strength of a result; the interpretation depends on your target range, your recent doses, your diet and any new medicines.
