High blood pressure: tests that reveal hidden organ damage
Hypertension is one of the most common chronic conditions in India, yet most people with it feel perfectly normal for years. The danger is not the pressure itself but what it quietly does to blood vessels, kidneys, heart and eyes over time. Routine lab tests cannot measure blood pressure directly, but they reveal whether your organs are already paying a price. Catching that damage early is what makes treatment timely and effective.

Symptoms and who is at risk
- Most people with hypertension have no symptoms at all, which is why it is called the silent killer
- Persistent headaches, especially at the back of the head in the morning
- Dizziness or a sensation of fullness or pressure in the head
- Blurred vision or occasional nosebleeds in more advanced cases
- Strong family history of high BP, heart disease or stroke
- Overweight adults, people with diabetes, heavy salt intake, smokers and those over 40
What these tests reveal about your organs
A kidney function test checks creatinine and urea levels that rise when the kidneys are struggling under prolonged high pressure. An electrolyte panel looks at sodium, potassium and chloride, imbalances in which can both worsen hypertension and point to kidney involvement or medication effects. A lipid profile assesses cholesterol and triglycerides, because high BP and abnormal lipids frequently travel together and compound cardiovascular risk. Fasting blood sugar identifies diabetes or pre-diabetes, conditions that greatly amplify the harm hypertension does to blood vessels.
Who should test and when
Anyone diagnosed with or suspected of having high blood pressure should get a baseline panel done before or soon after starting treatment, and then periodically as advised by their doctor. Adults above 35 with a family history of heart disease, kidney disease or diabetes benefit from testing even before a formal diagnosis. People already on antihypertensive or diuretic medications need periodic electrolyte and kidney checks because some drugs alter fluid and mineral balance. A repeat panel every six to twelve months is a reasonable general guide, though your physician will decide the exact interval.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take these blood tests while on blood pressure medication?
Yes, and in fact your doctor will usually want you to continue your medications before testing so the results reflect your actual day-to-day status. Always inform LabONE and your doctor about all medications you take, as some antihypertensives and diuretics can affect electrolyte and kidney readings.
Is fasting required for the hypertension test panel?
Fasting for eight to ten hours is required for the fasting blood sugar and lipid profile components. You may drink plain water during the fast. When you book a home collection in Dehradun, our team confirms the fasting instructions at booking.
