What is a CA 15.3?

CA 15-3 is a protein shed by some breast cancer cells into the bloodstream, and its role is narrow, specific and frequently misunderstood. It is a monitoring tool for a cancer already diagnosed, not a way of finding one. It is not sensitive enough to screen: many early breast cancers produce little or none, so a normal result offers no reassurance whatsoever. CA 15-3 is ordered by an oncologist as part of managing a diagnosed breast cancer, most usefully in advanced or metastatic disease where it helps track response to treatment. It may be measured before starting treatment to establish a baseline, since a marker that was never raised in the first place cannot be used to follow that patient. It is not recommended for screening healthy women, and it is not the right test for a breast lump or a change you have noticed. For those, the appropriate path is a clinical examination and imaging, mammography or ultrasound depending on your age, with a biopsy if indicated.
