What is a Chloride?

Chloride is the main negatively charged ion outside cells, and it generally moves with sodium to maintain electrical neutrality and fluid balance. That partnership means chloride rarely tells you much on its own, and its value comes from how it behaves relative to sodium and bicarbonate. Its principal use is in assessing acid-base status. A raised chloride with a low bicarbonate suggests a normal anion gap metabolic acidosis, typically from prolonged diarrhoea losing bicarbonate, from certain kidney tubular disorders, or from large volumes of saline given intravenously.
