What is a HAV IgM?

Hepatitis A is a liver infection spread through contaminated food and water, which makes it common wherever sanitation is imperfect, and it circulates widely in India. IgM antibodies are the immune system's first response, appearing around the time symptoms begin and persisting for roughly three to six months, so their presence indicates an infection happening now or very recently. That distinguishes this test from HAV IgG, which persists for life and indicates past exposure or vaccination. The illness itself is usually self-limiting: fever, marked fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, discomfort under the right ribs, then jaundice with dark urine and pale stools, resolving over several weeks. Unlike hepatitis B and C it does not become chronic and does not cause cirrhosis, and most people recover completely with rest and fluids. The important exception is that hepatitis A is generally milder in children and more severe in adults, and rarely it causes acute liver failure, which is why worsening jaundice, confusion, drowsiness or bleeding are warning signs requiring immediate hospital care rather than home management.

Why take this test?

HAV IgM is advised for acute onset of jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, nausea with loss of appetite, or fever with fatigue and right-sided abdominal discomfort, particularly where liver enzymes are raised. It is indicated in an outbreak, or after eating or drinking somewhere with doubtful hygiene, and in household contacts of a confirmed case. It is usually ordered as part of a viral hepatitis panel alongside hepatitis B and C markers, since acute jaundice needs those excluded too, and with liver function tests to judge severity. Testing matters chiefly for diagnosis and for public health, since knowing the cause allows contacts to be vaccinated and hygiene measures to be reinforced; there is no specific antiviral treatment, and care is supportive. Hepatitis A is preventable by vaccination, which is worth discussing with your doctor if you are not immune.

FAQs: HAV IgM in Dehradun

Is hepatitis A serious?

Most people recover fully with rest and care and do not develop long-term liver disease. Your doctor monitors liver function and advises on hydration, diet, and when to seek urgent care.

What is the difference between HAV IgM and IgG?

IgM appears with the illness and lasts three to six months, so it means a current or recent infection. IgG persists for life and means past infection or vaccination, in other words immunity. They answer opposite questions.

Can hepatitis A become chronic?

No. Unlike hepatitis B and C it does not persist and does not cause cirrhosis or liver cancer. Recovery is usually complete, though fatigue can linger for some weeks and relapse of symptoms occasionally occurs before full resolution.

When should I seek urgent care?

If jaundice deepens, or if you develop confusion, drowsiness, persistent vomiting, bleeding or bruising easily, or a marked reduction in urine. These can indicate acute liver failure, which is rare but serious and needs hospital assessment immediately.

Can it be prevented?

Yes. A safe and effective vaccine exists, and it is worth discussing with your doctor if you are not already immune, particularly before travel or during an outbreak. Safe drinking water, thorough handwashing and careful food hygiene remain the other defences.
