What is a Magnesium?
Magnesium is a cofactor for hundreds of enzyme reactions and is essential to nerve conduction, muscle contraction, heart rhythm and bone structure. Its measurement carries one important caveat that shapes interpretation: only about one percent of the body's magnesium is in blood, the rest being inside cells and in bone, so the serum level is an imperfect reflection of total body stores and someone can be genuinely depleted while the blood level still reads normal. Despite that, a low serum magnesium is clinically significant when found. It causes muscle cramps and twitching, tremor, weakness, numbness, poor appetite, nausea and, at lower levels, disturbances of heart rhythm and seizures. It has a further consequence that is easy to miss: magnesium deficiency causes a low potassium and a low calcium that will not correct until the magnesium itself is replaced, so persistently low potassium despite supplementation is a classic clue. Common causes include prolonged diarrhoea, alcohol excess, poorly controlled diabetes, malabsorption, and medicines, particularly diuretics and long-term proton pump inhibitors for acid reflux.
Why take this test?
A magnesium test is advised for unexplained muscle cramps, twitching or tremor, persistent weakness, numbness or tingling, palpitations or a documented rhythm disturbance, and for seizures without an obvious cause. It is specifically indicated where potassium or calcium remain low despite replacement, because magnesium deficiency is a frequent and frequently overlooked reason for that. It is checked in people on long-term diuretics or proton pump inhibitors, in chronic alcohol use, in poorly controlled diabetes, in malabsorption or after bowel surgery, and in prolonged diarrhoea or vomiting. It is also part of bone assessment alongside calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D. It is usually ordered within an electrolyte or metabolic panel rather than alone, since magnesium abnormalities rarely occur in isolation and the surrounding values are what explain them.

FAQs: Magnesium in Dehradun
How much does a Magnesium cost in Dehradun?
A Magnesium at LabONE in Dehradun costs ₹450. Home sample collection is free on any booking of ₹999 or more (a ₹199 visit fee applies below that). Every report is pathologist-reviewed and delivered on WhatsApp with the MIRA Smart Report explaining it in plain language.
Can I be magnesium deficient with a normal blood level?
Yes. Only about one percent of body magnesium is in the blood, so the serum level is an imperfect guide to total stores. Where the clinical picture strongly suggests deficiency, your doctor may treat despite a normal reading.
Why does my potassium not correct?
This is a classic clue to magnesium deficiency. Low magnesium causes potassium loss that will not respond to potassium supplements until the magnesium itself is replaced. If potassium keeps falling despite treatment, magnesium is worth checking.
Can acid reflux medicines cause this?
Long-term proton pump inhibitors are a recognised cause of low magnesium, and the association is often missed because the medicine is taken for years without review. Tell your doctor how long you have been on one, and never stop a prescribed medicine without advice.
What are the symptoms of low magnesium?
Muscle cramps and twitching, tremor, weakness, numbness or tingling, poor appetite and nausea. At lower levels it can cause heart rhythm disturbances and seizures, which is why persistent unexplained cramps with palpitations warrant testing rather than assumption.
Do I need to fast for this test?
Fasting is not strictly required, though a morning sample is preferred for consistency, and it is usually drawn within an electrolyte or metabolic panel. Avoid taking a magnesium supplement immediately before the sample, and tell your doctor if you take one.
