What is a OGTT (Pregnancy 3 Sample)?
The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test is the standard way to diagnose gestational diabetes, the raised blood sugar that appears for the first time during pregnancy. It works by deliberately stressing the system and watching how the body copes. After an overnight fast a first blood sample is taken, you drink a measured 75 gram glucose solution, and two further samples are taken at exactly one hour and two hours. Three readings are needed because a single value cannot distinguish someone whose sugar rises normally and clears quickly from someone whose sugar climbs and stays high. In pregnancy the placenta produces hormones that work against insulin, so blood sugar naturally runs a little higher; gestational diabetes is what happens when the pancreas cannot keep up with that extra demand. Crucially, the thresholds used in pregnancy are lower than for ordinary diabetes, so a value that would be unremarkable outside pregnancy can still be significant during it.

The OGTT is offered to most pregnancies at 24 to 28 weeks, which is when placental hormones peak and gestational diabetes typically declares itself. How do I prepare for the GTT?
Fast overnight for 8 to 12 hours, taking only water. Eat normally for the preceding two or three days rather than cutting carbohydrates, because under-eating beforehand can distort the result. Bring something to occupy the two-hour wait, since you must stay at rest and cannot eat, drink anything other than water, smoke or walk about between samples.
How long does the test take?
About two and a half hours from the first sample. You cannot leave and return, because the one-hour and two-hour samples must be taken at precisely those intervals from finishing the glucose drink. Plan the morning around it.
What if one of the three values is high?

Is the glucose drink safe, and what if I vomit it?
