What is a Rubella IgG?

Rubella, or German measles, is a mild illness in children and adults but a serious one in early pregnancy, where infection in the first trimester can cause congenital rubella syndrome: deafness, cataracts, heart defects and developmental problems in the baby. IgG antibodies persist for life after infection or vaccination and confer protection, so this test answers one question with real practical consequence: are you immune. In India most women are immune through childhood MMR vaccination or past infection, but a meaningful minority are not, and identifying them before pregnancy is the entire point.
