What is a Uric Acid?
Uric acid is the end product of breaking down purines, compounds found in your own cells and in certain foods. The kidneys clear most of it. When production outpaces clearance, uric acid accumulates and can come out of solution as needle-shaped crystals, and those crystals are what cause the disease. Deposited in a joint they trigger gout, an intensely painful, sudden inflammation that classically strikes the base of the big toe overnight and can also hit the ankle, knee or fingers. Deposited in the kidney they form stones. Levels are pushed up by red meat, organ meat, shellfish, alcohol, particularly beer, and fructose-sweetened drinks, and also by obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, reduced kidney function and diuretic medicines. One point causes frequent confusion: a raised uric acid alone is not gout.
