ESR test: what a high sed rate means
The erythrocyte sedimentation rate, or ESR, measures how quickly red blood cells settle to the bottom of a tube in one hour. Inflammation makes them clump and settle faster, so a higher ESR suggests inflammation somewhere. Like CRP it is non-specific (a useful pointer rather than a diagnosis) and the two are often read together.

What a high ESR means
A raised ESR signals non-specific inflammation. It can rise with infection, autoimmune disease, and anaemia, and also naturally with age and in pregnancy. A normal ESR does not completely rule out disease, which is why doctors interpret it in context and often pair it with CRP and a CBC.
ESR vs CRP
ESR rises and falls slowly over days, so it reflects a longer window, while CRP responds within hours and settles quickly. Because they move on different timescales, doctors frequently order both to build a clearer picture of inflammation and its course.

What is a normal ESR?
It is broadly up to around 20 mm/hr, but normal values rise with age and differ between men and women and between labs. Check the range on your report and discuss the result with a doctor.
Do I need to fast for an ESR test?
No. An ESR does not require fasting and can be done at any time of day.
