Magnesium test: what low magnesium means
Magnesium takes part in hundreds of processes in the body: muscle and nerve function, blood sugar control, blood pressure, and bone health. Deficiency is under-recognised because the early signs are easy to miss, and it often travels with low calcium or potassium. A simple blood test is the starting point.

When to check magnesium
- Muscle cramps or twitches
- Fatigue and weakness
- Palpitations
- Poor or disturbed sleep
- Numbness or tingling
- Alongside a low calcium or potassium
What low magnesium can mean
Low magnesium can come from poor intake, problems absorbing it in the gut, diabetes, heavy alcohol use, or certain medicines such as diuretics and long-term acidity tablets. Because magnesium helps regulate them, a deficiency can also drag down your calcium and potassium.
The normal range
Blood magnesium is typically around 1.7-2.4 mg/dL, with the exact range on your report. One caveat: most magnesium sits inside cells and bone, so the blood level can read normal even when body stores are low. Doctors therefore weigh the result against your symptoms.

Frequently asked questions
What is a normal magnesium level?
Roughly 1.7-2.4 mg/dL, but check the range printed on your report. Because blood magnesium can be normal despite low body stores, your doctor interprets it alongside your symptoms.
Do I need to fast for a magnesium test?
Fasting is not usually required. If it is bundled with a lipid or sugar test, follow the fasting advice for those.
