Thyroid problems: symptoms, tests, and what to do
Your thyroid is a small gland in your neck that sets the pace of your metabolism. When it makes too little hormone (hypothyroidism) or too much (hyperthyroidism), the effects show up everywhere: energy, weight, mood, skin, hair, and periods. Thyroid problems are common, especially in women, and easy to miss because the symptoms are vague and build slowly.

Common symptoms of a thyroid problem
- Unexplained weight gain or weight loss
- Persistent tiredness or low energy
- Hair fall, dry skin, or brittle nails
- Feeling unusually cold or unusually hot
- Irregular periods or trouble conceiving
- Low mood, anxiety, or poor concentration
Which test tells you what
TSH is the most sensitive marker and usually the first test ordered; an abnormal TSH is often the earliest sign. A full Thyroid Profile adds T3 and T4 to show how much hormone the gland is actually making, which helps confirm and classify the problem.
When to get tested
Test if you have several of the symptoms above, a family history of thyroid disease, are planning a pregnancy, or are on thyroid medication and due for a review. Fasting is not required, so you can give the sample any time.
