Unexplained weight loss: when to get tested
Unintentional weight loss (losing weight when you are not dieting or trying to) is a symptom doctors take seriously. Common, testable causes include an overactive thyroid and uncontrolled diabetes, while a Complete Blood Count can hint at other issues. It is worth both testing and seeing a doctor, especially if the loss is significant.

Signs that warrant testing
- Losing weight without trying to
- Eating normally or more, yet still losing weight
- Excessive thirst and frequent urination
- Palpitations or feeling too warm
- Persistent tiredness or weakness
- Night sweats or other ongoing symptoms
Common testable causes
An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism, checked with TSH) speeds the metabolism and burns weight. Uncontrolled diabetes (checked with HbA1c) makes the body burn fat and muscle for fuel. A Complete Blood Count can flag anaemia or other clues. See our thyroid and diabetes guides for more.
Where to start, and when to see a doctor
A reasonable first panel is TSH, HbA1c, and a CBC; a full body checkup is the broader option. Importantly, significant or ongoing unintentional weight loss should always be reviewed by a doctor promptly, as it occasionally points to causes that need direct medical attention.

Frequently asked questions
When should I worry about weight loss?
Losing a noticeable amount of weight without trying (particularly with other symptoms like fatigue, thirst, or palpitations) is worth a prompt doctor's review along with some basic blood tests.
Which tests for unexplained weight loss?
Thyroid (TSH), blood sugar (HbA1c), and a Complete Blood Count are sensible first checks, or a full body checkup. Pair the results with a doctor's assessment.
