HbA1c test: your 3-month blood sugar average explained
HbA1c measures the percentage of your haemoglobin that is coated with sugar, which reflects your average blood glucose over the previous 2-3 months. Because it is not affected by what you ate that morning, it is the standard test to diagnose and monitor diabetes, and it needs no fasting. When to check your HbA1c
- Excessive thirst or a dry mouth
- Passing urine more often, especially at night
- Unexplained tiredness or weight change
- Slow-healing cuts or frequent infections
- A family history of diabetes, or being overweight
- Already diagnosed (for routine 3-6 monthly monitoring)
How to read your HbA1c number
Below 5.7% is normal. 5.7-6.4% is prediabetes, a warning stage that is often reversible. 6.5% or above, usually on two tests, suggests diabetes. For most people already living with diabetes, a target around 7% is common, but your doctor sets a personal goal based on your age and health.
Why HbA1c, not just a sugar test
A single fasting or random sugar is a snapshot that one bad day can skew. HbA1c is the three-month average, so it is harder to game and better for diagnosis and tracking control. Many people are screened with both an HbA1c and a fasting or post-meal sugar for a complete view.
