What is a CBC + Peripheral Smear?

This pairs the automated Complete Blood Count with a pathologist's examination of a stained blood film from the same sample. The two are complementary rather than overlapping. An automated analyser is fast and precise at counting, and it describes populations by averages: it will report that red cells average a certain size without noticing that some are teardrop-shaped, fragmented or sickled, and it counts white cells without recognising that some are immature blast forms that should never circulate. The smear catches exactly those things. It also identifies parasites directly, including malaria, spots platelet clumping that explains a falsely low automated platelet count, and assesses whether the marrow appears to be responding appropriately to anaemia.
