What is a G6PD?
This test measures G6PD, an enzyme that protects red blood cells from damage. People born with low G6PD can develop sudden anaemia (haemolysis) after certain medicines, infections, or foods such as fava beans. It is an inherited condition, so the test is usually done once.
Why take this test?
A G6PD test is advised before starting certain drugs (such as some anti-malarials), for a newborn with prolonged jaundice, for a family history of the condition, or after an unexplained episode of red-cell breakdown.
