What is a PCV + HB?

This pairs haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein, with packed cell volume, the proportion of blood volume occupied by red cells. The two normally track together at roughly a one-to-three ratio, and the value of measuring both lies in what happens when they diverge or move for reasons other than red cell production. Because PCV is a proportion, it is affected by plasma volume as well as by red cells: dehydration concentrates the blood and raises PCV without any change in red cell numbers, and conversely over-hydration or rapid fluid replacement lowers it. That sensitivity gives this pair a specific and locally important use. In dengue, plasma leaks out of blood vessels during the critical phase and the haematocrit rises, and a rising PCV alongside a falling platelet count is one of the clearest indicators of significant plasma leak, prompting closer monitoring or admission. For that purpose it is the trend across repeated measurements rather than any single value that carries the information, which is why it is often repeated daily or more often during an illness.

Why take this test?

This pairing is advised where anaemia needs confirming and fluid status is also relevant: in dehydration from vomiting, diarrhoea or heat, which matter through the Dehradun summer, and in monitoring illnesses that cause plasma loss including dengue and burns. It is used in follow-up of known anaemia where haemoglobin and haematocrit are the values being tracked, and in assessing conditions with genuinely increased red cell production such as chronic lung disease, sleep apnoea or living at altitude. It is not a substitute for a Complete Blood Count in an undifferentiated illness, because it omits the white cell count, the differential and the platelets, and in dengue in particular the platelet count is essential alongside it. Where a fever is being monitored, ask your doctor for the full count so platelets and haematocrit can be read together.

  • Confirming anaemia where fluid status is also relevant
  • Dehydration from vomiting, diarrhoea or heat
  • Monitoring plasma leak in dengue or burns, alongside platelets
  • Follow-up of known anaemia on established values
  • Chronic lung disease, sleep apnoea or living at altitude
  • Not a substitute for a full count in undifferentiated illness

FAQs: PCV + HB in Dehradun

How much does a PCV + HB cost in Dehradun?

A PCV + HB at LabONE in Dehradun costs ₹150. Home sample collection is free on any booking of ₹999 or more (a ₹199 visit fee applies below that). Every report is pathologist-reviewed and delivered on WhatsApp with the MIRA Smart Report explaining it in plain language.

Why measure both when they track together?

Because they can diverge, and because PCV is affected by plasma volume as well as red cells. Dehydration raises PCV without changing red cell numbers, and in dengue a rising PCV signals plasma leaking out of the vessels.

Is this enough to monitor dengue?

Not on its own. The haematocrit is one half of the key pattern; the platelet count is the other, and a rising haematocrit with falling platelets is what indicates significant plasma leak. Ask for a full Complete Blood Count during a dengue illness.

Can dehydration make my results look normal?

It can mask anaemia, yes. Concentrating the blood raises both haemoglobin and PCV, so a dehydrated anaemic patient may read deceptively close to normal, and the anaemia becomes apparent once rehydrated. Tell your doctor if you have been vomiting or unable to drink.

What does a high PCV mean?

Most often dehydration. Genuine overproduction occurs with smoking, chronic lung disease, sleep apnoea, living at altitude and certain bone-marrow conditions. A persistently high value in someone well hydrated should be discussed with a doctor.

Do I need to fast?

No, fasting is not required. Stay normally hydrated unless your doctor has advised otherwise, since dehydration alters both values. Home collection is available across Dehradun.
