What is a Platelet Count?

Platelets are the smallest cells in blood and the first responders to any injury to a vessel wall. When a vessel is damaged they arrive within seconds, stick to the site and to each other, and form the initial plug that stops bleeding while the slower clotting-factor cascade builds a stable clot around it. The count measures how many are circulating in a fixed volume. Below roughly 150,000 the count is low, a state called thrombocytopenia, though bleeding risk in practice only becomes significant well below that, and serious spontaneous bleeding is generally a concern under about 20,000. A platelet count is advised for easy bruising, bleeding gums, frequent nosebleeds, small red pinpoint spots on the skin, heavy periods, or bleeding that takes unusually long to stop.
