What is a Urine Routine?
A Urine Routine examines the same sample three separate ways, which is why one cheap test yields so much. The physical part records colour, clarity and specific gravity, telling you about hydration and whether something is clouding the urine. The chemical part uses a reagent strip to detect protein, glucose, ketones, blood, bilirubin, nitrites and leukocyte esterase, along with pH. The microscopic part spins the sample and looks at the sediment for pus cells, red cells, epithelial cells, bacteria, crystals and casts. Each finding points somewhere specific. Pus cells with nitrites suggest a urinary infection. Protein suggests the kidney's filter is leaking and is one of the earliest signs of kidney damage in diabetes or high blood pressure. Glucose suggests blood sugar has exceeded what the kidney can reabsorb. Crystals point towards stone formation, and casts, which are moulds formed inside the kidney tubules, indicate the problem is in the kidney itself rather than lower down. This breadth for a very low price is why it appears in almost every full-body checkup.
Why take this test?
A urine routine is advised for burning, stinging or unusually frequent urination, urgency, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, visible blood, lower abdominal or flank pain, or fever with urinary symptoms. It is a core part of routine health screening and of antenatal care, where it is repeated through pregnancy to catch urinary infection and the protein that can signal pre-eclampsia. It is standard in the annual review for anyone with diabetes or high blood pressure, because protein appearing in urine is often the earliest warning that the kidneys are being affected, well before creatinine changes. It is also used to investigate unexplained swelling, recurrent stones, and pre-operative fitness. Where it suggests infection, the usual next step is a urine culture, which identifies the organism and the antibiotic that will work; the routine test flags the problem, the culture names it.

FAQs: Urine Routine in Dehradun
How much does a Urine Routine cost in Dehradun?
A Urine Routine at LabONE in Dehradun costs ₹150. Home sample collection is free on any booking of ₹999 or more (a ₹199 visit fee applies below that). Every report is pathologist-reviewed and delivered on WhatsApp with the MIRA Smart Report explaining it in plain language.
How is the urine sample collected?
A clean, mid-stream sample in the container provided. Your phlebotomist will guide you during home collection.
Which sample is best, and does timing matter?
The first urine of the morning is ideal, because it is the most concentrated and abnormalities show up more readily. Collect midstream in the sterile container, and get it to the lab within about an hour or refrigerate it, since cells break down and bacteria multiply in a sample left standing.
What is the difference between urine routine and urine culture?
The routine test is fast and screens for pus cells, blood, protein and sugar, flagging that infection or kidney involvement is likely. The culture takes 48 to 72 hours but grows the bacteria, names them and identifies which antibiotic will work. Routine detects; culture directs treatment.
Can I do the test during my period?
It is better to wait. Menstrual blood contaminates the sample and produces red cells and protein that have nothing to do with your urinary tract, which can trigger unnecessary further testing. If the test is urgent, tell the lab so the report can be interpreted correctly.
What does protein in urine mean?
It means the kidney's filter is letting protein through, and it is one of the earliest signs of kidney damage in diabetes and high blood pressure. It can also appear temporarily with fever, strenuous exercise or dehydration, so a single finding is usually repeated before conclusions are drawn.
