Hepatitis B and C screening in Dehradun
Hepatitis B and C are viral infections that attack the liver, often without any obvious symptoms for months or even decades. During this silent phase, the viruses can cause progressive liver damage, cirrhosis, or raise the risk of liver cancer. Simple, affordable blood tests can detect both infections early, before serious harm occurs. With early diagnosis, both are manageable, and Hepatitis C is now curable with modern antiviral treatment.

Who should get screened for Hepatitis B and C
- A family member or close contact diagnosed with Hepatitis B or C
- Planning surgery, a medical procedure, or a pregnancy
- Unexplained fatigue, loss of appetite, or yellowing of the skin or eyes
- A history of blood transfusion, organ transplant, or dialysis
- Having had a tattoo, piercing, or shared needles at any point
- Working in healthcare, a laboratory, or any setting with blood exposure
What do these tests detect?
The HBsAg test detects Hepatitis B surface antigen, a protein present in blood when the Hepatitis B virus is actively infecting the body. The anti-HCV test looks for antibodies your immune system makes in response to the Hepatitis C virus, indicating current or past infection. The Viral Marker 3H panel screens for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV in a single blood draw, making it the most efficient option for a comprehensive check. Together these give a clear picture of your liver-virus status and guide the next steps in care.
Who should screen, and what if a test is positive?
Anyone with a risk factor above should be screened at least once, and pregnant women are routinely tested as part of antenatal care in India. A reactive HBsAg does not always mean chronic active disease; your doctor will order confirmatory and liver function tests to assess the stage. A positive anti-HCV is followed by an HCV RNA test to confirm whether the virus is still active, as antibodies can persist after a resolved infection. Early detection lets doctors start monitoring or treatment promptly, preventing long-term complications.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get vaccinated against Hepatitis B if my HBsAg test is negative?
Yes. A negative HBsAg with a negative anti-HBs means you are not immune and would benefit from the Hepatitis B vaccine series, which is safe, effective, and widely available in India. Ask your doctor to check your antibody status and advise on vaccination if you have never been immunised.
Is Hepatitis C curable in India?
Yes. Hepatitis C is now highly curable with direct-acting antiviral medicines available and affordable in India. Most courses last about 12 weeks with cure rates above 95 percent. Early detection through screening is key, as treatment is most effective before significant liver damage.
